coming down from cloud nine
Mar. 30th, 2002 02:03 amFAB-U-LOUS.
They were rockin the house tonight. The performance was at the Globe East on North Ave in Milwaukee, just across the street from my beloved Oriental, home of the Rocky Horror Show. sigh.
It was a pretty nice place- about half the size of Abby Pub w/one balcony that seats about a dozen or so.
Very small and intimate.
Daddio was gracious enough to be my legal guardian and get me in. We arrived about 15 mins early and waited almost an hour for the opening band to start.
I didn't mind much. I spent that hour gazing at Andrew and Nora from across the room. As for the opening band- West of Rome.........they were horrible. I mean HORRIBLE. The guys in Chicago weren't the greatest and we wanted them to hurry up so we could see who we came for, but at least they had some personality. These guys had lyrics like 'if I didn't pass out maybe I'd still have my girlfriend'.
For an hour and a half. The fluffy alterna-rock might get pulled off by some angsty college guys, but not 3 middle aged guys with beer bellies. The keyboard guy gave me and Heather psycic visions of Eric Holbus in 20 years. Go Speeder Dog. Apparently the rest of the audience didn't care for them either. Everyone talked thru the entire set and gave them weak golf claps.
After building up my nerve and being called a chicken by heather and dad for 20 minutes, I walked over to andrew at his cd table. I signed the mailing list and asked him about 'Music of Hair', an album I don't have yet, or even heard of for that matter. He said it was an ancient solo album, but he was out of them. I bugged him about the new album for a while. He smiled and reported that it's coming along well and hopefully will be finished in a few months. I complimented him on his performance at Abby Pub. This was going on 40 mins into the stupid West of Rome peoples mind numbing droning, so I asked him how much longer they were going. He said it would probably be another HALF HOUR! I told him that those guys are going to make him look great, and that he's worth the wait. Before I started giggling like a 12-year-old, I shook his hand + walked away.
I wasn't as well prepared as Miss Liz by bringing along a note pad to write down the set list, but I'll do my best. I did, however, bring my camera along. WITH NO FILM IN IT. Oh well, next time. Damn.
The majority of the songs I knew were from the Swimming Hour. They opened the show with Core&rind Two Way Action. Then Nora took lead vocals for Wait. It took them a while to really get into it. Nora seemed like she wasn't having as much fun with it as last time. I could really tell andrew wasn't into it right away. It took 4 songs before he broke any strings...
they played 11:11,Way Out West, Why, Headsoak, How Indiscreet, Case and Point, along with quite a few new songs.
One of them was given a long intro - Capital I, along with a fast one. I can't remember the title, but the chorus had "Walk the Plank" in it. One of my favorite new songs was called "Love" (I think) I must admit he was much more articulate this time. Or maybe I'm just used to his cute mumble shy talk. Or maybe because I was 5 feet away from him...
Heather and Dad thought it was annoying that they couldn't understand. Actually, they sat at a table and I stood and danced in the front row along with an eclectic group of peoples. A guy that looked like he needed to be at a Phish or Dave Matthews concert was next to me. He was enjoying the show. (He reminded me of Paul Kunasch.)
Half way into the show, a couple started ballroom/swing dancing. Very cute. Nora applauded them after Headsoak.
They finished the set with Greenland. :)
For the encore, Nora and Andrew did a really awesome duet version of 'Waiting to Talk' followed by a fast country style Tea & Thorazine with the whole band.
So far no call from ren faire.........
eh. I knew my audition was awful. Oh well. At least I tried, right?
