HELLO LIVEJOURNAL!!! How I've missed you!
So much has gone on I can't even begin to explain. Massive ups and downs here and there. Currently, I'm on the up and hope it stays for a while, thank you. I have made it through my first week of my last internship at St. Luke's in Milwaukee. It's 40 hours a week in a huge monster Aurora building on 27th Street. My clinical instructor is a Physical Therapist that specializes in neurological diagnoses like MS, stroke, amputees and vestibular/balance disorders. I've never had the chance to work with any of those and now they're all I get to see! I am confident that it will be a great experience for me and look forward to the next 7 weeks I get to work there. Everyone is really nice. all 89 of them. egads. Name tags are my friend right now. Hope no one thinks I'm a perv looking at their chests before making eye contact...
I started taking yoga about two weeks ago. It's an hour long class held every Monday at the Aurora building I work at in Kenosha. I'm still trying to lose weight (and have to some degree. I'm *almost* down to the same weight I was in high school). It's such a great class! I gathered a bunch of people for support, like my friend Donna from PTA school, Megan and her mom and Randy! Yes, Randy is in yoga with me. Such a highly evolved member of the male gender. At first I was worried that he would hate it because he was one of the two men in the class (the other being a 60ish guy obviously being forced to participate by his wife sporting matching gym suits and sweatbands). But my concerns were quickly blown away by his flying through the most difficult poses without even trying.
This week in particular was crazy, because I was settling into my new clinical site and trying to work a couple hours in Kenosha after that (HA. that didn't last long. good grief. I'm not superwoman...) and had full run through of acts I & II of the musical at Park plus yoga plus fun weekend activities that I will get into later. First, let me give an update on the musical. I now know its title.... 'The Melody Lingers On'. We're growing closer and closer to opening night, which is leading to increased screaming from the director and a shared feeling of nervousness throughout the cast. Since this is a revue type show, it was thought that it would be 'cute' to put the orchestra onstage instead of in the pit. This wouldn't be a problem if the stage wasn't one big sound vacuum and the band wasn't pushed to the far back wall of the stage to make room for the performers. We can't hear them and they sure as hell can't hear us singing in the opposite direction with our backs to them. oh man was the first day with the orchestra fuuuun. Things are getting a little better, I suppose. There's just something about a cheesefest of a show that doesn't sit right with me. Nevertheless, I am having a good time. I got such a kick out of putting on my tap shoes again. I saw the scuffs and got flashbacks of Austin Henken's huge clown feet stomping on mine during a softshoe dance for 'Tea for Two'. I just about cried when I went under the stage. Everything is exactly the same down there. My lamp post from when I sang Memory is standing in the same spot that it did 3 years ago. I looked at the prop closet and remembered having a go with curtain boy against the door and poor Clemon opening the door on us...
::sigh::
This week of rehearsals were reeeeeealy fun because I had the chance to finally sing my solo with the orchestra. It was my first time singing it on stage, with the dialogue that goes before it and learning entrances and exit locations and all that. It didn't go too bad, thanks to Mr. Johnson. He stopped the orchestra mid song, stood in front of me, made a few jokes to clear the air, and conducted me so I'd know the tempo they wanted. It felt incredible to be standing on that stage with a follow spotlight. I love that feeling of being up there. Everyone was so sweet afterwards. Like my freakin preschool teacher, Joleen Carlson, (who is also part of the alumni in the show) turned to me and said that I made the group very proud.
*shameless self promotion* ::ahem:: If anyone is in the area and wishes to be showered with cheese in an all out plethera of cheese, The Melody Lingers On will be on Thursday March 27th (the day after my 21st birthday! no celebrating on a school night or the night before a show, dammit), Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th at 7:30 and for all you lovers of matinee, there will be a 2:00 on Sunday the 30th. All seats are $7.00. Come see me and my old principal Dr. Scott boogie down to the tunes of Irving Berlin. And Tim Palachek too. A.J. Landleir (sp?) has a brief but painful solo not to be missed.
Last friday I had the chance to see fabulous vaudeville stylings of the one and only Moonie and Broon at the Appletree Theater in Highland Park, IL. AND I had a nice gab session with , whom I haven't seen since August. The guys kicked ass. It was so nice to see them again. Randy, Becky, Becky's mom and a friend from the Chicago cast of Rocky and I were all sitting in the front row and were pulled into the show on a number of occasions. First Broon demostrated the razor sharpness of his knife by cutting up a carrot, flinging pieces at me, offering them as souveniers. Isn't he thoughtful? Then he finished his portion of the show with his trick with a bowling ball, a juggling pin and an apple, which he eats as he juggles. He of course left a stage full of apple pieces for Moonie to silently scowl at and sulkingly sweep up. He pulled Randy onstage to help him with the dustpan. The show rocked. I hope my pictures turn out. Becky and I got a shot of Broon with our legs draped across his lap. yummmmmmmmmy.
Then on Saturday, I had the opportunity to see another opera. My friend Donna from school is the most awesomely generous wonderful person who happens to have season tickets to the Civic Opera House in Chicago. About a month ago I was woken up at Randy's at 8 in the morning with a phone call. She was really sick and couldn't make it to the show that day. I was *convienently* in Chicago at the time and gladly accepted her ticket. That day I went to see 'Thais' at 2:00 and it was AMAZING. The music was beautiful, the actors were amazing, the costumes and sets were awesome. This weekend I saw 'La Traviata'. Well, I missed the first 1/2 hour act because they don't let you in after the curtain goes up. I feel so cultured!! :)
I hope everyone is enjoying their spring break. ( I have to wait until the week of easter for mine. grrrrrr. )
