Pan's Labyrinth
Jan. 1st, 2007 11:56 pmI'm going to have nightmares from this movie for a few weeks, but it was well worth it. It was by far the best movie I've seen in a long time. The characters were really interesting and complex and the plot moved in unpredictable patterns. The digital components worked really well and blended well with the rest of the film, even from our close seats. I wasn't sure about the R rating until about 20 minutes into it when someone gets bludgeoned in the head with a bottle onscreen. It got much much worse from there. It was a really fascinating parallel between the violence happening in the 'real world' and the other reality of Ofelia's fairy tale. I didn't know which was more horrifying: the military captain capable of unspeakable violence or the creepy fairy and child eating monster with eyes on its hands. ::shudder::
We got there kind of late and had to sit in the second row from the front, which made the subtitle reading difficult. I'm just glad we weren't in the front row! I can remember going to see Empire Strikes Back when George Lucas added in all that unnecessary crap and released it to the theatres and sitting in the front row. I had a nice headache after that.
It's in limited release for now, I hope to see it again. It definitely needs a second viewing. You know me and my fantasy movies.
Hey look at that- two posts in one day. I'm off to a good start this year!
